Let me start by saying I have yet to find a book by Mo Willems that does not make me or my children laugh. Even the title of this book brought giggles when we found it at the library…just imagine a naked mole rat! Beyond a funny title though, this is a great book for young readers. The story is about a naked mole rat named Wilbur. He is the only naked mole rat in his colony that likes wearing clothes, which upsets all of the other naked mole rats. Read the rest of the book to find out how Wilbur shows courage as he stands up to others who are trying to bully him. After you have finished reading, take time to talk about rules, individuality and courage with your child. Your child may even enjoy researching the naked mole rat species as they are very interesting! Warning….don’t research them while you eat lunch, because some of their habits are a little(okay, a lot) disgusting!
