Are You Mentoring a New Student this Year? Here’s How to Start Strong.

Starting something new can feel exciting – and a little daunting. Whether you are mentoring for the first time or meeting with a new student this year, a little preparation can go a long way. Here are four simple ways to set yourself up for a great year together.

Start Simple

Every child needs someone in their corner. That’s the heart of Kids Hope USA. You don’t need to bring gifts, snacks, or a bag full of activities each week.  Starting simple is key. Your student wants to get to know you, read the books from the school library, play a game your  Kids Hope USA program has, and share conversation. Resist the pressure to “pull out all the stops.” Your steady presence truly is the best present when developing this new relationship.

Be Consistent

One of the greatest strengths of Kids Hope USA is the consistency mentors bring. Mentors and students meet weekly throughout the school year. During that one-hour time block each week, you and your student build a consistent connection. Some weeks may feel easier than others, but showing up week after week communicates trust and care in a way nothing else can. Children benefit from this type of stability in their lives as they learn and grow. By simply showing up week in and week out, you are helping children thrive!

Celebrate Small Wins

Sometimes progress is quiet and subtle.

  • A shy student starts answering your questions with more detail.
  • A mid-year high five appears out of nowhere.
  • A once-reluctant reader eagerly picks out a book.

These moments show trust and a strong foundation being built and are moments worth celebrating!

Some students are more outspoken and extroverted than others, but regardless of your student’s demeanor, continue to celebrate the small wins throughout your time together.

Lean on your Program Director(s) and Prayer Partner

Kids Hope USA program directors and prayer partners are there to serve and help YOU throughout the year. In times of challenges, celebrations, and everything in between.  Make sure you lean on them continually. Your program director(s) are in the school building frequently and can provide insight, encouragement, and resources to support your mentoring relationship. They also know the Kids Hope USA best practices and can provide resources when you need them.

Prayer partners are a gift. They are amazing individuals that have committed to praying for you and your student. Give them a call or send them a text with any prayer requests or praise reports at any time! They desire to be a part of this mentoring journey with you.

Are You Mentoring a New Student This Year?

If you are, you have the privilege of being a steady, caring presence in their life. If questions arise, reach out to your program director. They are happy to help with any specific needs.

Not yet a mentor? Connect with your church and see if they have a Kids Hope USA partnership. If not, consider starting the conversation – you could help open the door for others in your congregation to make a difference too through one-on-one mentoring!
