5 Indicators a Child Could Benefit from a Mentor

Ever wonder what children could benefit from a mentor? Are there certain requirements for a student to receive one? No!  In fact, we believe that every child can benefit from a mentor.

That being said, when schools select students to have a Kids Hope USA mentor in their lives, they tend to identify students using the following indicators.

1. They Could Use One More Caring Adult in Their Corner

Not every child has a trusted adult in their life they can turn to. Others don’t have a trusted adult outside of their immediate family they can rely on. Whether a young student has one trusted adult or five, they can always benefit from one more caring adult in their corner.

A mentor is exactly that. Mentors consistently support and care for their students. Standing alongside parents, teachers, principals and counselors, Kids Hope USA mentors show kids they are valued and loved.

2. They Need Someone Who Simply Shows Up

Children thrive on consistency. Whether they’re processing family changes, adjusting to a new school, or navigating mental health, having one adult who reliably shows up each week can make a lasting difference.

Mentors and students meet consistently throughout the school year. Together they play games, read, do schoolwork, talk, and much more. This intentional time helps provide the student with assurance, knowing their mentor will show up for them.

3. They Could Benefit from a Boost in Confidence

Some children are naturally quiet, hesitant, or unsure of themselves. Others may struggle to recognize their own strengths. Students desire to feel equipped and confident at school.

A mentor comes in and celebrates the small wins, brings encouragement, and helps students begin to believe what they’re capable of.

4. They Need Someone to Listen

Instead of immediately solving their problems, children need someone willing to hear them out. Whether they’re processing friendship drama, school difficulties, family life, or just everyday emotions, having an adult (outside of their immediate family) who listens without judgment helps children feel seen and valued.

Mentors are screened and trained, understanding that students need a listening ear. Mentors prompt their students with questions to better understand how they’re doing. Active listening is the key to a great mentoring hour!

5. They’re Ready to Dream Bigger

Sometimes the greatest gift a mentor can offer is to help a child imagine what’s possible. What are their hopes and dreams for the future? Through conversations and experiences together, mentors help students discover those new interests, set goals, and believe their future is full of opportunity. Mentors help their students dream bigger.

The Truth Is…

The truth is that these five indicators are reminders that every child could benefit from a mentor – from having another caring adult cheering them on.

Every student deserves encouragement, consistency, and someone who believes in them.

At Kids Hope USA, we believe one caring adult, showing up one hour a week, can help open the door to a lifetime of possibility. Contact us to learn more and start your mentoring journey!
